About Fein Violins

Hi! I'm Andy Fein, violin and bow maker, restorer, and owner at Fein Violins. I also play violin and viola. I consider myself a lifelong student of violin-family instruments, their construction, their acoustics, and their history.

I started my apprenticeship in violin making at the Chicago School of Violin Making in 1977, and I've been making, researching, restoring and learning about violins, violas, cellos, and bows ever since.

I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ surrounded by musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra, great violin makers, and playing a number of instruments in a wonderful school music program. I left high school early to attend a special advanced program at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. After Hahnemann, I spent a year at Reed College in Oregon, and then in 1977, I  finished my B.A. in Music, Cum Laude, at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Along the academic way, I also studied biochemistry, chemistry, physics, acoustics, and the history of art and music.

I opened Fein Violins in 1982, and have since been serving professionals and students with superior service and offering an excellent selection of fine violins, violas, and cellos.

We are a stringed instrument shop specializing in hand crafted and hand made fine violins, fine violas, fine cellos, and fine Pernambuco bows. Our violin shop is located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and our stringed instruments are played by professional and devoted amateur musicians all around the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada, Central America, South America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

I've been the violin maker and owner of Fein Violins for over 30 years. My mission has always stayed the same- to provide to string players and their families great sounding violins, violas and cellos that play great and are great values. And my measure of quality is player driven- I want you, the player, to love the sound and feel of your instrument!

All of the hand made instruments that we sell are set up, adjusted, and checked by me and played by the professional musicians on staff at Fein Violins. If any instrument does not meet the high standards of our string-playing staff, we simply will not sell it.

All of us here at Fein Violins play violin, viola, and/or cello. We live and work in the string world, so we'll know what you're talking about.

The hand-crafted violins, violas, and cellos that we sell at Fein Violins are each set up with professional quality bridges and strings. Every instrument includes a bow, a case, a one year warranty, and 100% trade-in value. We want you to be absolutely, fully satisfied with your instrument purchase, and we are confident that you'll find your instrument to have both a great sound and great value. If you are not completely satisfied with your instrument, we would be more than happy to make any necessary adjustments to its set-up so that it perfectly suits your needs as a musician. Or, if you prefer, you always have 10 days after the date you receive your instrument to evaluate it. If you don't love it, return it and receive a full refund - we'll even cover the cost of return shipping!

We feature hand-crafted fine violins, fine violas, and fine cellos made in our partner violin shop, Atelier Cremone, a consortium of French and Italian luthiers. We also offer hand-made violins, violas, and cellos by the makers Francois Costa and D. Albert, both of Markneukirchen, Germany. All of these fine, hand-made instruments are made exclusively for Fein Violins, using our exact specifications regarding wood age, grain structure, measurements, and varnish formula. Our hand-crafted fine stringed instruments are unique and available exclusively through Fein Violins. Additionally, antique, vintage, and rare hand-made violins, violas, and cellos are available.
